How you get your results: from consent to report
Getting your Ancient Origins reports isn't instant, and it isn't fully automatic either. Based on MyHeritage's own description of the process: after you open Ancient Origins from the DNA menu and confirm you have a Complete or Omni subscription, you're asked to give explicit consent for your DNA data to be processed for this feature — it's opt-in, not something that runs automatically on every DNA kit. Hunter-Gatherer and Farmer Breakdown
A narrower, single-question report showing what percentage of your DNA traces back to early hunter-gatherer populations versus early farming populations — two of the broadest and most consequential lineages in post-Ice-Age European and Near Eastern prehistory.
Genetic Similarities Breakdown
A more advanced view that compares your DNA against the entire reference database (rather than a single tailored model) and returns the top ancient populations, pairs of populations, or trios of populations that are the closest genetic match — useful if you want to see the full field of candidates rather than just one model's best guess.
Genetic Distance Maps
A visual plot (built on the same PCA method used to generate your DeepAncestry Coordinates) that places you, and every ancient reference population, as points in genetic space. Populations that cluster near each other on the plot are genetically similar to each other; where "You" land on the map shows which ancient populations you're closest to.
Sample Database
A reference encyclopedia of the ancient DNA samples and populations behind the other four reports — filterable by sample type or location, with details like time period, sample count, and haplogroups for readers who want to dig into the underlying research rather than just the summary percentages.
Understanding your Genetic Fit score
Alongside your percentage breakdown, MyHeritage displays a Genetic Fit score — a number indicating how closely your DNA matches the ancient populations used in that particular model. A lower score means a closer match to the reference populations; it isn't a percentage and shouldn't be read as one. Because the Genetic Fit score is calculated per historical era, it's normal to see it change as you move the era slider — some eras will fit your DNA more closely than others, which itself can be informative about which period the algorithm has the strongest reference data for.
Privacy: what happens to your DNA data
Ancient Origins is opt-in — MyHeritage states that results are only generated after you explicitly consent, and the feature doesn't run automatically just because you have a qualifying subscription. According to MyHeritage, your raw genetic data itself is never transferred to Illustrative DNA; only the anonymized DeepAncestry Coordinates vector is shared, and MyHeritage states that Illustrative DNA deletes it at the end of each session. - Read the population descriptions, not just the label. MyHeritage typically links each ancient group to a short description of the archaeological samples and time period behind it — this context matters more than the label alone.
- Move the era slider before drawing conclusions. Your breakdown during the Bronze Age can look very different from your breakdown during the Middle Ages — both are "correct," they're just answering the question at different points in history.

- Expect updates over time. As MyHeritage and Illustrative DNA add more ancient samples to the reference panel, your breakdown may shift slightly on recalculation — this is normal and reflects a growing dataset, not an error.
