Neanderthal DNA: What Your Percentage Actually Means
"How much Neanderthal DNA do I have?" is one of the most common questions people ask after any DNA test that reports on deep ancestry. The short answer: if your ancestry isn't predominantly sub-Saharan African, you almost certainly carry some — most non-African people carry roughly 1-2% Neanderthal DNA, a genetic leftover from interbreeding that happened tens of thousands of years ago.

Why almost everyone outside Africa has some
Neanderthals lived across Europe and western Asia for hundreds of thousands of years before going extinct roughly 40,000 years ago. When early Homo sapiens migrated out of Africa, they encountered and interbred with Neanderthal populations already established in Eurasia. Because that interbreeding happened after the ancestors of modern Africans and non-Africans had already diverged, the Neanderthal DNA mixed into the population that went on to populate Europe, Asia, and eventually the Americas and Oceania — while populations that stayed in sub-Saharan Africa were largely unaffected, aside from later, more limited back-migration.
What the percentage does and doesn't tell you
Your reported percentage is a genome-wide average, but it doesn't mean your Neanderthal DNA is spread evenly across your chromosomes — it's concentrated in specific segments, and which segments you inherited matters more than the headline number. Two people can both show "2% Neanderthal" and carry almost entirely different stretches of Neanderthal-derived DNA, inherited through completely different ancestral lines. Does it affect anything about me?
Research has linked specific Neanderthal-derived gene variants to a range of modern traits and health-related outcomes, including skin tone, hair characteristics, some aspects of immune response, and altered risk for certain conditions — though this is an active and still-developing area of research, and no single trait can be attributed to Neanderthal ancestry with certainty from a consumer test alone.
