Find and Understand Your Ancient DNA Origins
A plain-English guide to ancient DNA ancestry testing — what it can tell you about the populations you descend from going back thousands of years, and how to read the results once you have them.
Where to start

A few of the questions readers ask most before testing or paying for an ancient-ancestry add-on. The full list, with more detail, is on the FAQ page.
What is ancient DNA ancestry testing?
It compares your genetic data to DNA recovered from archaeological remains dated to specific historical periods, showing which sampled ancient populations your DNA most closely resembles — unlike a standard ethnicity estimate, which compares you to modern reference populations.
How accurate are the results?
They're statistical estimates based on comparison to available ancient DNA reference samples. Results can shift over time as reference panels grow, and they describe population-level resemblance, not a documented, unbroken family lineage.
Is ancient DNA testing free?
It depends on the provider. Some ancient-origins features, such as MyHeritage's Ancient Origins, are gated behind a premium subscription tier rather than included with a free account or one-time kit purchase.
