Two ancestral roots, not one

Unlike the single-migration story that shaped much of the "Out of Africa" narrative, East Asian ancestry is better described as the product of two long-separated regional populations gradually mixing over thousands of years. Ancient genomes recovered from sites along the Yellow River are linked to early millet agriculture and, over time, spread ancestry widely across what is now China. A second, genetically distinct lineage — associated with hunter-gatherer groups from the Amur River basin in the far northeast and adjacent coastal regions — contributed a separate ancestral stream that shows up at varying proportions across modern East Asian, and to a lesser extent Southeast Asian and Siberian, populations.

Ancient DNA research in East Asia lagged behind Western Eurasia for years, partly because warmer, more humid conditions across much of the region degrade DNA faster than in the cold, dry environments that preserved much of the early European ancient-DNA record. One of the earliest breakthroughs came from Devil's Gate Cave in the Russian Far East, where genomes roughly 7,700 years old were successfully recovered and sequenced, helping establish a genetic baseline for hunter-gatherer populations in the region before later farming-associated migrations reshaped the ancestry map.

Jōmon ancestry and the Japanese archipelago

Japan offers one of the clearer regional case studies. Ancient genomes from Jōmon-period hunter-gatherer sites, who inhabited the Japanese archipelago for thousands of years before the arrival of Yayoi-period rice agriculture from the Asian mainland, show a genetically distinctive ancestry component that remains detectable in the modern Japanese population today, layered together with mainland East Asian farming-associated ancestry that arrived later. This two-layer pattern — an earlier hunter-gatherer population later blended with an incoming farming population — mirrors the broader northern/southern ancestry framework seen across East Asia more generally.

A category referencing East Asian ancient ancestry generally reflects statistical resemblance to one or both of these deep ancestral streams — northern millet-farmer-associated or southern hunter-gatherer-associated — rather than a single, uniform "East Asian" ancient population. Because the region's ancient-DNA reference panels have expanded significantly only in the last several years, coverage and category naming can vary more between providers here than for some longer-studied Western Eurasian categories. East Asian ancestry vs. other ancient categories

Does an "East Asian" category mean I have Chinese, Japanese, or Korean ancestry specifically?

Not necessarily at the country level. Ancient-origins categories at this scale typically reflect resemblance to broad regional ancestral streams — such as northern millet-farmer-associated or southern hunter-gatherer-associated ancestry — that predate modern national or ethnic boundaries by thousands of years. A modern country-level ethnicity estimate from the same company is a separate, more recent-focused measurement.

Why is East Asian ancient-DNA research newer than European research?

Ancient DNA degrades faster in warm, humid environments, which describes much of East Asia more than the colder regions where many of the earliest ancient genomes were recovered. Improvements in extraction techniques over the past decade have significantly expanded the number of usable ancient East Asian genomes, but the reference panel is still younger and smaller than the well-established Western Eurasian one.
