What Does Your Neanderthal DNA Percentage Mean?
Most DNA testing services that report Neanderthal ancestry show a single number — typically somewhere between under 1% and around 4% of your genome. That number is real and statistically meaningful, but it's easy to misread. Here's what it actually reflects, and what it doesn't.

Where the percentage comes from
Roughly 50,000-60,000 years ago, as early modern humans migrated out of Africa, they interbred with Neanderthal populations already established across Europe and Asia. That mixing left a small but detectable and permanent signature in the DNA of everyone descended from those migrating populations. A testing algorithm identifies this signature by comparing your genome, segment by segment, against sequenced ancient Neanderthal genomes and looking for stretches of DNA that match the Neanderthal reference more closely than they match other modern human reference populations.
Why your number isn't the same as anyone else's
DNA is inherited in randomly shuffled chunks — a process called recombination — from each parent, generation after generation. That means the specific Neanderthal-derived segments you carry, and how many of them survived tens of thousands of years of random inheritance without being shuffled out, is somewhat a matter of chance. Two unrelated people of similar ancestry can reasonably have noticeably different Neanderthal DNA percentages, and even full siblings can differ from each other for the same reason.
A higher number doesn't mean "more Neanderthal ancestry" in a simple sense
Because everyone with non-African ancestry descends from the same original interbreeding events, a higher percentage doesn't indicate a more recent or more direct Neanderthal ancestor — it just reflects that more Neanderthal-derived segments happened to survive the shuffling process in your particular lineage. It's a difference of degree within a shared ancestral event, not a difference in kind.
Does the percentage do anything?
Research has linked a small number of specific Neanderthal-derived gene variants to traits like immune response, skin and hair characteristics, and altitude adaptation in some populations — but these effects are tied to specific segments, not to your overall percentage. Two people with the same total percentage can carry a completely different mix of functional and non-functional segments.
